Shanghai

Well, I guess I'll be the first to post here. I'm from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. For the last five years I've lived in Shanghai. Vision has heard me go on about this, but I'm gonna share with everyone.

Shanghai is an amazing city. Personally, I think it's a great place to live. Very rarely do I get homesick, because, honestly, the place rocks.

Why?

First of all, Shanghai has got just about everything. Shopping, entertainment, site seeing, and a great nightlife.

The one thing that blows me away when I come home is the prices here. What I spend in one day in Toronto could give me one heck of a party week in Shanghai.

The city is massive. One of the only cities that you can see from space. There's so much to do there.

Shopping. I'm not a huge shopper, but even still. There are clothing markets everywhere with really good copies of top brand names. The markets are all negotiable. You should pay 1/3 of what the person asks. A pair of jeans should run you about (Canadian) $8.00 - $10.00. Shoes anywhere from $10.00 - $25.00.

If you don't like copies, you can go to Xujiahui shopping area where they have the real stores. But you're going to be western prices.

Entertainment... well, tons. Broadway shows, concerts (last year I saw Bjork), and there is quite the independant music scene coming up there now. Live Bar is the place to go for up and coming Chinese and Western bands.

Site-seeing. I still haven't done it all. The Oriental TV Tower, The Bund, Peace Hotel, Old Shanghai, Xujiahui, Nanjing Road, Hu Garden... so much to see and do there.

And of course, the nightlife. Rarely do I go to clubs anymore. Although I do like to dance. When I feel like dancing, I usually head to Judy's or Manhatten's. For cheap drinks and a good time, hit any of the Windows bars (there's five of them). I personally like hanging out at the Eager Beaver (the Canadian bar which is run by an Australian... don't ask).

There's quite a few Chinese dance clubs. They call them discos. But there are some great western clubs as well. Club Mao, Park, Miya, Pegasus... just to name a few.

It's pretty hard to blow a lot of money in Shanghai. I've never spent more than $20 CAD on a taxi anywhere. Plus (yeah, I'm trash) you can drink on the street, so on the way, we usually have a few as we go.

The cities around Shanghai are amazing too. Very close and not expensive to get to by train. All of these cities are within 2 hours of Shanghai.

Hangzhou - beautiful city and a wicked wicked nightlife as this is where all the universities are. One bar there, West Town, offers 3 bottles of beer for $2.00. But that's minor compared to the beauty of the city. In the middle of the city is West Lake. A man made lake that, at night, is just incredible.

Suzhou is also quite close. Sporting many varieties of gardens and old temples, it's pretty nice.

Sonjiang is actually a subburb of Shanghai, but there I've found a wicked resort. It's in the country, so you get none of the hustle and bustle of the city. The restaurant serves food straight from the farm out back.

And Wuxi. A small city surrounded by small mountains (or hills, the Chinese call them mountains... I beg to differ) and also has one of the largest Buddhist temples in this area of China. From miles away you can see the mammoth statue of Buddha on the top of the hill.

I gotta tell you. If you haven't been to Shanghai, it's definately something to put on your list of things to do.

Shanghai Rocks.

Yup, definitely would be nice to see China some day, but not just Shanghai, but ALL of it. :)
